Gebruik je gezonde verstand, probeer zelf na te denken en doe meer onderzoek. Als je niet zelfstandig nadenkt, gaat iemand anders dat voor je doen…

Iedereen heeft zichzelf wel eens horen zeggen: “Ik had kunnen weten dat dit zou gebeuren” of “dat had je toch kunnen weten?”. Je weet dan dat je gezonde verstand tegen je spreekt. Als je achter een paard gaat staan en deze een klap op zijn kont geeft, dan zou je kunnen weten dat het paard gaat trappen. Of, als je met regen gaat schilderen, dan zou je kunnen weten dat dit niet goed is voor het schilderwerk. Zo werkt het ook met het realiseren van doelstellingen. Als je iets wilt bereiken, dan moet je daar energie in te stekken. Oefening baart kunst. Alleen door te oefenen leer je om bijvoorbeeld triple twenties te gooien. Input leidt tot output. De wal keert het schip en tegen de stroom inroeien kost meer energie, dan met de stroom mee te varen.

Wat is gezond verstand?

Gezond verstand is het (praktische) vermogen van ieder persoon om zaken, die door bijna alle mensen gedeeld worden, te zien, te begrijpen en te beoordelen zonder enige noodzaak voor debat omdat we weten dat het zo werkt in de wereld. Het is een basaal kenvermogen, dat wij stilzwijgend met elkaar delen en dat ons in contact brengt met een gemeenschappelijk ervaren wereld. Met onze omgeving. Met de wetten van de natuur. Met de wet van oorzaak en gevolg. Van actie en reactie. Met het vermogen om logisch en ook kritisch na te denken en te luisteren naar onze intuïtie.

Ons luie brein versus kritisch denkvermogen

Met name in het openbaar bestuur, bij politici en politiek activisten lijkt het gezonde verstand de laatste jaren te zijn verdwenen. In de stad meer dan op het platteland. Het wordt steeds meer de rug toegekeerd door al die mensen die onder de indruk zijn van de ‘expertise’ waarmee deskundigen ons dagelijks leven tegenwoordig overspoelen. Die expertise beloont ons luie brein in plaats van dat het ons uitdaagt om onszelf vragen te stellen. Vragen die beginnen met de woorden waarom, wie, wat, wanneer, hoe en waar, bieden je al gauw houvast in deze brei van meningen.

Waarom is het logisch om onze energievoorziening afhankelijk te maken van zon, wind en biomassa, terwijl kernenergie of gas gestookte elektriciteitscentrales betrouwbaarder zijn, meer leveringszekerheid geven en ook geen CO2 uitstoot kennen? Waarom moeten we überhaupt van het gas af als de behoefte aan stroom de komende jaren alleen maar toeneemt en andere landen juist aan het gas gaan? Waarom worden elektrische auto’s gesubsidieerd terwijl we weten dat de CO2 uitstoot daarvan wordt verplaats naar de energiecentrale? Of waarom investeren we niet meer in klimaatadaptie, in plaats van te strijden tegen klimaatverandering? Om maar een paar van de duizenden voorbeelden te noemen.

In gevoelige politiek correcte kwesties zijn deze volgende drie vragen meestal wel voldoende: In vergelijking tot wat? Wat gaat het kosten? En, welke harde bewijzen heb je daarvoor? Het gezonde boerenverstand helpt ons om door onlogische visies en standpunten heen te kijken. Het helpt ons om praktische oplossingen te vinden of ons tegen onrealistische voornemens te verzetten en ons af te vragen: wat kost het en wat levert het ons nu precies op? Want zoals Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 -1882) schreef: “Niets verbaast mensen zo veel als gezond verstand en oprechtheid.”
