Documentairemaker Michael Moore werd bekend als iemand die heilige huisjes omver schopt. Hij richtte zich tegen de vrije verkoop van vuurwapens in de VS en tegen de financiële sector, en werd een held van links. Nu heeft hij een film gemaakt, Planet of the humans, waarin hij het opneemt tegen het establishment van de groene energie.
De documentaire schildert zijn teleurstelling als blijkt dat de verhalen van de groene lobby niet kloppen; die teleurstelling slaat om in boosheid als hij merkt dat de voorstanders van wind- en zonne-energie dat al lang doorhadden. Dat levert komische scenes op, bijvoorbeeld bij een groen zonnefestival dat zogenaamd op zonnepanelen draait. Bij het eerste regenbuitje heeft het groene publiek geen zin om de lichtshow en de versterkte muziek te missen, en dus worden in een verscholen hok de dieselturbines aangezet. Bij doorvragen blijkt dat het festival dag en nacht op olie draait, hooguit ’s middags voor de show een paar uur op zon. De documentaire hamert erop: ’intermittency’ ofwel ’onderbrokenheid’. Er is maar een aantal uren per dag zon en wind, dus je moet voor de volle capaciteit fossiele brandstof hebben klaarstaan voor de onderbrekingen. De kosten daarvan moet je meerekenen bij groene energie.
Bergen afval
De documentaire toont dat installaties voor zon en wind enorme hoeveelheden natuur kosten (leden van de wandelvereniging zien achter een oranje lint dat de berg waarop ze altijd wandelden wordt opgeblazen voor groene stroom), en dat ze na een beperkte levensduur bergen afval opleveren. Dure elektrische auto’s blijken uiteindelijk op fossiele brandstof te draaien. Vilein zijn de beelden waarop groene politici beweren dat zonnepanelen gemaakt zijn van zand (beelden van woestijnen in hun tv-spotjes), waarna onderzoeker Zehner (die er boeken over geschreven heeft) uitlegt dat zand niet werkt, dat je kwarts moet hebben. Dan zien we beeld van grote explosies om kwarts te winnen. Zehner vertelt dat je om vanuit kwarts zonnecellen te maken ze moet verhitten met steenkool.
Het is een lange film, frontaal tegen klimaatpausen Robert Kennedy Jr., Al Gore en oud-gouverneur Schwarzenegger. Interessant is om de reacties aan de groene kant te zien. Die zijn treurig. ’Hij heeft misschien wel een punt, maar hij speelt de verkeerde mensen in de kaart.’ Of: ’Het is waar, maar het zou goedwillende mensen op verkeerde gedachten kunnen brengen.’ Ook de evergreen: ’Dat zou buiten de context geciteerd kunnen worden.’ Verder wordt gezegd dat Moore de feiten niet allemaal precies weergeeft, en eenzijdig is. Dat is vast en zeker waar, maar dat zei de National Rifle Organization ook over zijn film Bowling for Columbine, en dat vonden diezelfde mensen destijds prima. De eerste reactie van groen was om de film te willen verbieden, en van de netwerken te weren, maar dat lukte niet door YouTube.
Elektrische auto’s
Het is een lange film, maar er worden veel belangrijke punten gemaakt. Goed dat iemand vraagtekens zet bij het stimuleren van elektrische auto’s (fietsen, lopen of openbaar vervoer is veel beter). Goed om de milieubeweging te mobiliseren tegen zeeën vol windmolens. Goed om biomassa als duurzame energie af te wijzen; bossen verstoken tégen CO2-uitstoot klopt niet. Ook in Nederland is dit actueel nu er biomassacentrales bijkomen. Er is een vreemd soort bureaucratische redenering waardoor het verbranden van bossen bestempeld wordt als ’duurzaam’: door bossen te kappen voldoen we aan het klimaatakkoord en het Urgenda-vonnis. Maar switchen van het verbranden van steenkool naar het verbranden van bomen is geen vooruitgang. Interessant is ten slotte dat ze in het buitenland gas als ’green energy’ beschouwen (terwijl we in Nederland extreme bedragen investeren om er af te komen). Uiteindelijk biedt de film helaas geen oplossing (minder mensen op de planeet is geen oplossing).
Dus wat te doen? Laten we ervan uitgaan dat je overtuigd bent van de noodzaak om CO2- uitstoot te beperken (iets wat PVV en FvD nog niet erkennen). Wat is dan een verstandige aanpak? Er moet een volledig nieuw klimaatplan komen, zonder zonneparken op zee, zonder het kappen van oerwouden. We gaan geen landschappen en zeeën verwoesten voor technologieën die de oplossing niet zijn. Subiet stoppen met biomassa als duurzaam te bestempelen, en daarvoor natuur te vernietigen (ondanks het opvallende Urgenda-vonnis). We moeten ophouden veel geld te besteden om Nederland als enige land van het gas af te brengen.
Kernenergie
Eén aanpak is kernenergie. De huidige technologie draait al decennia in Frankrijk en Zweden, tot volle tevredenheid, en daar is stroomproductie in vergelijking met Duitsland (steenkolen) vrijwel CO2-neutraal. We moeten werken aan een nieuwe generatie kerncentrales (zoals thorium-reactoren). Het is niet te begrijpen dat in de huidige klimaatplannen kernenergie geen dragende technologie is.
Het was tot dusver eigenaardig stil in de Nederlandse media over de film van Moore. Kennelijk een ongemakkelijke waarheid. Mijn advies is de film zeker te gaan zien (er is een Nederlands ondertitelde versie op YouTube).
